Set shortly after the events of the original film, this sequel finds the cyborg police officer RoboCop confronting a new menace: a violent narcotics epidemic sweeping Detroit, driven by a charismatic, drug-addled cult leader, while the corporation that created him works to replace him with cheaper, unstable prototype units. Director Irvin Kershner, best known for 'The Empire Strikes Back', brings darker, more grotesque body-horror elements to the sequel, particularly in its climactic reveal of a monstrous new RoboCop built from a young addict's brain. Critics found it a step down from Paul Verhoeven's razor-sharp satirical original, criticizing its more chaotic tone and diminished social commentary. It's nonetheless remembered fondly by genre fans for its willingness to go stranger and grimmer than a typical studio sequel.
