Adam Sandler stars as Longfellow Deeds, a small-town pizzeria owner and greeting-card poet who inherits a staggering $40 billion fortune from an uncle he never knew, and is swiftly besieged by New York opportunists — including Winona Ryder's tabloid reporter posing undercover to expose him — once he moves to the big city. This remake of Frank Capra's 1936 Mr. Deeds Goes to Town swaps the original's Depression-era social commentary for broad Sandler-brand slapstick and sentimentality. Critically panned as a shallow update of a beloved classic, it was nonetheless a substantial commercial success on the strength of Sandler's box-office draw at the time.
