Gus Van Sant's biographical drama chronicles the final eight years in the life of Harvey Milk (Sean Penn, in an Oscar-winning performance), who became the first openly gay man elected to public office in California as a San Francisco city supervisor, building a coalition-based gay-rights movement before his assassination in 1978. The film traces Milk's evolution from a Castro Street camera-shop owner into a savvy political organizer, while foreshadowing his death through Milk's own recorded testament, dictated in case of assassination. Josh Brolin plays Dan White, the troubled fellow supervisor whose grievances would end in tragedy. Both a rousing political history and an intimate character study, the film became an urgent touchstone during the era's Proposition 8 battles over marriage equality.
