Shot with a restless, kinetic camera and a rock-and-roll soundtrack that would become a Scorsese signature, the film announced both director and star as major new voices in American cinema. Harvey Keitel's guilt-wracked protagonist, caught between street loyalty and Catholic conscience, established the moral terrain Scorsese would return to for decades. Widely regarded as the true beginning of the director's mature style, years before 'Taxi Driver' or 'Goodfellas'.
