Bob Harris, a fading movie star, lands in Tokyo to shoot a whiskey commercial for a fee that embarrasses him, trapped by jet lag and a worn-out marriage. At the same hotel he crosses paths with Charlotte, a newlywed young woman whom her photographer husband keeps leaving alone, lost as to what to do with her life. Between them a delicate, melancholy rapport is born, made of sleepless nights, whispered conversations and walks through a city neither of them understands. An intimate portrait by Sofia Coppola about loneliness, dislocation and those fleeting encounters that leave a mark forever.
