In the midst of Prohibition, Joe Coughlin, the son of a Boston police captain, trades street crime for the rum business and ends up building an empire in the sweltering Florida of the twenties. Turned into a mob lieutenant, he manages distilleries, bribes and fragile alliances while falling in love with a Cuban woman and clashing with rivals, corrupt politicians and the Ku Klux Klan. Directed by and starring Ben Affleck, based on the Dennis Lehane novel, it is a gangster fresco of classic tone and elegant photography, shot through with guilt, loyalty and the price of surviving in a world without rules.
