Fresh out of Harvard Law School, a young Black lawyer travels to Alabama in the early 1990s to defend the condemned who have neither resources nor a voice. His most painful case is that of a man sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit, upheld by little more than the coerced testimony of a criminal and the entrenched racism of an entire judicial system. Against the indifference of the authorities and the threats, the attorney sets out to dismantle the sham and restore the inmate's dignity. Based on true events, it is a spare, deeply humane courtroom drama about racial injustice and a hope that refuses to give up.
