Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Anthony Swofford, a U.S. Marine sniper deployed to the 1991 Gulf War, in an adaptation of Swofford's memoir that captures less the chaos of combat than the numbing, sun-scorched tedium of a war his unit is trained for but never fully gets to fight. Director Sam Mendes, working from a script by William Broyles Jr., renders military masculinity as both seductive and corrosive, with Jarhead's soldiers cracking under boredom, jealousy and unspent violence rather than enemy fire. A pointed anti-war statement disguised as a soldier's memoir, it stands apart from most combat films by depicting a war largely defined by waiting.
