David Cronenberg's body-horror take on virtual reality follows a legendary game designer, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, who goes on the run with a marketing trainee, Jude Law, after an assassination attempt, forcing them to plug into her latest bio-organic game console — a fleshy, umbilical-corded pod — to determine whether it has been sabotaged. As in much of Cronenberg's work, the boundary between flesh and technology, and between the game world and reality, dissolves entirely, leaving both characters and audience unsure what layer of simulation they're inhabiting. Made the same year as 'The Matrix', the film explores similar themes of reality-questioning through a distinctly grosser, more psychosexual lens. It's since become a cult favorite among Cronenberg devotees for its uncompromising commitment to his body-horror obsessions.
