A grounded, feminist reimagining of the Cinderella tale, stripped of magic, starring Drew Barrymore as a spirited, well-read servant girl in Renaissance France who wins a prince through wit and conviction rather than a fairy godmother. Anjelica Huston makes a deliciously wicked stepmother, and Leonardo da Vinci turns up as a benefactor. Directed by Andy Tennant, it is a lush, intelligent romance that pleasantly surprised critics. A smart, charming spin on a familiar story.
