Ed Speleers plays a farm boy who discovers a mysterious egg that hatches into a dragon, forming an unbreakable telepathic bond that thrusts him into a destined role as the last hope against a tyrannical king, played by John Malkovich. Director Stefen Fangmeier, adapting Christopher Paolini's bestselling novel, assembles a starry voice cast including Rachel Weisz as the dragon Saphira and Jeremy Irons as a veteran Dragon Rider mentor. The film compresses a dense fantasy novel into a fairly conventional chosen-one adventure. Critics found it a pale imitation of stronger fantasy franchises, and plans for sequels were quietly abandoned after its lukewarm reception.
