Henri-Georges Clouzot directed this landmark French psychological thriller in which the frail wife and the tough mistress of a cruel boarding-school headmaster, played by Vera Clouzot and Simone Signoret, conspire to murder him, only for his body to vanish and inexplicable signs of his presence to surface. Masterfully suspenseful with a legendary twist, it is a cornerstone of the genre that influenced Hitchcock and countless successors. Widely regarded as one of the greatest thrillers ever made.
