Ron Howard's Depression-era biopic stars Russell Crowe as Jim Braddock, a washed-up boxer forced into manual labor and breadlines after a string of losses and a broken hand, who improbably claws his way back into the ring and toward a shot at the heavyweight championship. Renée Zellweger plays his devoted wife Mae, while Paul Giamatti earned an Oscar nomination as Braddock's loyal, scrappy manager Joe Gould. Howard frames Braddock's comeback as a symbol of hope for Depression-battered America, drawing his against-the-odds championship fight against the fearsome Max Baer into an underdog spectacle of near-mythic proportions. A well-crafted, if somewhat conventional, entry in the boxing-biopic genre, it showcases Crowe at the peak of his early-2000s dramatic powers.
