Terry Gilliam's masterwork of dystopian satire envisions a retro-futuristic totalitarian state drowning in paperwork, plastic surgery, and paranoia, where a meek government clerk named Sam Lowry escapes into fantasies of heroic rescue. When a bureaucratic error leads him to the woman of his dreams and into the crosshairs of the security apparatus, the film becomes a darkly comic meditation on the individual crushed by an indifferent system. Equal parts Kafka, Orwell, and Monty Python, 'Brazil' remains one of cinema's most visually inventive and intellectually daring science fiction films, notorious for its troubled production and the studio battle over its bleak, uncompromising ending.
