Michael Mann directs Chris Hemsworth as a furloughed convict-hacker recruited by American and Chinese authorities to track down a shadowy cybercriminal responsible for a nuclear plant meltdown and a market-manipulation scheme, chasing the trail from Chicago to Hong Kong to Jakarta. True to Mann's aesthetic obsessions, the film treats hacking with the same tactile, neon-lit intensity he usually reserves for heists and shootouts, and its globe-trotting production values give the digital-crime plot unusually physical stakes. Critics were split on the film at release, with some finding Hemsworth miscast and the plot muddled, but Mann loyalists have since reappraised it as an underrated late-period entry in his filmography, admiring its formal control even where the script falters. A director's cut recut by Mann himself has further boosted its critical standing among cinephiles.
