John Wells directs this fierce adaptation of Tracy Letts's Pulitzer-winning play about the toxic Weston clan, drawn back to their Oklahoma home by a family crisis. Meryl Streep is ferocious as the pill-addled, venomous matriarch, matched by Julia Roberts as her embattled daughter, both Oscar-nominated. Fueled by scorching dialogue and a fine ensemble, it is essentially a filmed acting duel. Some found it stagey and shrill, but the performances make it a compelling family blood-sport.
