Matteo Garrone

Matteo Garrone is an Italian director born in Rome, celebrated for visceral, visually striking films that move between gritty crime realism and dark fairy-tale fantasy. Gomorrah, adapting Roberto Saviano's nonfiction exposé of the Neapolitan Camorra crime organization, used an unglamorous, near-documentary style to become one of the most acclaimed Italian crime films of its era. Dogman, a bleak parable of humiliation and revenge in a decaying seaside town, and Tale of Tales, an opulent anthology of dark fairy tales, showed his range between social realism and stylized fantasy. Io Capitano, following two Senegalese teenagers' perilous migration journey to Europe, brought his unflinching visual approach to contemporary migration crisis. Garrone's ability to move between unsparing social realism and vivid fantastical imagery while retaining a consistently dark moral vision has made him one of the most significant contemporary Italian directors.
