Katsuhiro Otomo is a Japanese director and manga artist born in Miyagi Prefecture, whose work fundamentally reshaped international perceptions of what animation could achieve. Akira, adapted from his own manga and set in a dystopian, neon-lit Neo-Tokyo, combined groundbreaking hand-drawn animation with a violent, adult-oriented cyberpunk story, and its 1988 release is widely credited with introducing anime to mainstream Western audiences. Memories, an anthology film he wrote and partly directed, and Steamboy, an ambitious steampunk adventure over a decade in the making, showed his sustained interest in elaborate mechanical and industrial imagery.
