灯火辉煌的剧场内，正准备进行一场盛大的音乐会，所有的演职人员全部由名叫巴斯特·基顿。台上的音乐家们天南海北聊着大天，台下的观众男女老幼，喜怒哀乐各不相同（以上角色均有巴斯特·基顿一人扮演）。未过多久，场面开始变得混乱起来。 这时，在舞台中央睡觉的小场工（巴斯特·基顿 Buster Keaton 饰）被人弄醒，原来之前的音乐会只不过是自己的南柯一梦。虽然醒来，他却仍然深思恍惚，分不清梦境和真实，因此面对镜中的自己他会惊讶，见到双胞胎女郎也会几近崩溃。等到演出开始时，现场有各种状况不断，小场工一会儿要扮成猴子，一会儿又要乔装成士兵，还要躲避大个子的追赶，整个晚上疲于奔命……
