南北战争结束后，老兵霍华·坎普想回到家园重新开始生活，却发现他的土地已经不见了。为了筹钱赎地，他决定当一个捉歹徒拿赏金的猎人，并且看上了悬赏五千元的大盗罗伯特·雷恩。一名老矿工和一名不光荣退伍的北军以为霍华是警长，乃同意帮助他捉拿大盗和跟他结伴同行的少妇，但事成后发现了真相，两人便要求霍华瓜分赏金，霍华拒绝。大盗趁机分化三人之间的关系以便逃亡，于是在七天的回程中产生了一连串勾心斗角的矛盾。
