1980年的美国德克萨斯州西部，美国与墨西哥交界的格兰德河镇，一穷二白的前越战老兵莱维雷伦·摩斯（乔什·布洛林 饰）在打猎中偶然发现了数具尸体，以及数量庞大的海洛因和用来交易毒品的大量现金。死者都是火拼中死于枪下的黑帮分子。雷伦当即决定把枪战现场留下的毒品交易巨款带回家窝藏。夜里，忐忑不安的雷伦回到交易地点。不想，他的举动给自己招致杀身之祸。至此，黑帮头目派出冷血杀手安东·奇古尔（哈维尔·巴登 饰）、老警长埃德·贝尔（汤米·李·琼斯 饰）、雷伦展开了一场相互追逐的杀戮之旅。
