杰克（杰克·莱蒙 Jack Lemmon 饰）和妻子贝蒂（奥林匹亚·杜卡基斯 Olympia Dukakis 饰）结婚已经几十年之久了，在这几十年里，贝蒂把杰克照顾的无比的周到，杰克也早已经习惯了被妻子安排得井井有条的生活。然而意外发生了，一天，贝蒂因为突发心脏病而住进了医院，得知此消息，在外打拼的孩子们纷纷回到了父母的身边。 　　贝蒂希望能够向杰克隐瞒自己的病情，但是夫妻两人之间的默契令杰克还是知道了真相。失去了贝蒂的照顾，杰克的生活陷入了一片混乱之中，此时大儿子琼恩（特德·丹森 Ted Danson 饰）决定放下手头的工作，留在父亲身边帮助父亲的生活重新步入正轨。
