Walter Brennan

One of the finest character actors Hollywood has produced, American Walter Brennan was the first performer to win three Oscars, all for Best Supporting Actor. A specialist in grumpy old men, drunkards and loyal companions of the western, he left his mark on classics such as 'Red River', 'My Darling Clementine' and 'Rio Bravo'. His cracked voice and weathered physique made him irreplaceable as the hero's veteran friend. He died in 1974, having defined the face of the supporting player in the cinema of the West.
