He drew international attention as the seductive con man Tolyan in Pavel Chukhrai s The Thief (1997), which was Oscar-nominated for best foreign-language film. He crossed over to Hollywood with roles in Behind Enemy Lines (2001) and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011). As a director he made Papa (2004) and adapted the espionage saga Rodina. He now heads the Oleg Tabakov Theatre School in Moscow.
