Tabu
Across four decades and five languages, Tabu has been Indian cinema's great chameleon. Born in Hyderabad in 1971, she won two National Film Awards, for 'Maachis' (1996) and 'Chandni Bar' (2001), building a reputation for carrying difficult, interior women. International viewers found her in Mira Nair's 'The Namesake' (2006) and as the mother in Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi' (2012). Her later run is remarkable: the Gertrude figure of 'Haider' (2014), the implacable investigator of 'Drishyam' (2015) and the deliciously wicked Simi of 'Andhadhun' (2018), before going global again in 'Dune: Prophecy' (2024). Restraint is her superpower.
