This adaptation of Homer's epic sends Odysseus away from a peaceful Ithaca to fight ten grinding years at Troy, then strands him another decade trying to sail home, at the mercy of gods who treat his suffering as sport. Armand Assante plays the wandering king with weathered cunning, facing down the Cyclops, the sorceress Circe, and the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis on his way home. Greta Scacchi's Penelope holds off suitors in Ithaca while Isabella Rossellini and Bernadette Peters bring divine mischief as goddesses steering his fate, with Eric Roberts rounding out a starry ensemble. It's old-fashioned, sword-and-sandal storytelling that trusts the myth to still carry weight.
