Shinichiro Watanabe followed 'Cowboy Bebop' with this hip-hop-scored samurai romp, pairing the loose-limbed, breakdance-inflected fighter Mugen with the rigidly traditional swordsman Jin, two men who'd sooner kill each other than cooperate. Fuu, the waitress who saves them both from execution, drags them along on her search for the samurai who smells of sunflowers, and the trio's episodic road trip becomes an excuse for Watanabe to collide Edo-period Japan with graffiti, turntablism, and anachronistic swagger. Ayako Kawasumi and Kazuya Nakai voice a rivalry that stays prickly even as the show's genuine affection for its misfits builds. It's a genre mash-up that still feels like nothing else.
