Bea Arthur plays Maude Findlay, a loudly liberal woman in Tuckahoe, New York, on her fourth marriage and never short of an opinion. Norman Lear spun the character off from 'All in the Family', where she had appeared as Edith Bunker's cousin, and CBS aired six seasons between 1972 and 1978 with Bill Macy as her husband Walter and Adrienne Barbeau as her daughter. The show pushed sitcom subject matter into abortion, alcoholism, menopause and depression, and its two-part 1972 abortion episode drew organised protests and refusals to air from several stations.
