Owen (Jonah Hill) and Annie (Emma Stone) are strangers who enroll in a pharmaceutical drug trial promising to permanently erase psychological trauma, guided by scientists Dr. Mantleray (Justin Theroux) and his estranged mother Greta (Sally Field), whose sentient supercomputer starts malfunctioning as the experiment progresses. Once the drugs kick in, the miniseries detonates into a genre-hopping fantasia — noir heist, fantasy quest, alien-conspiracy pastiche — with Stone and Hill playing radically different versions of themselves inside each simulated scenario. Cary Joji Fukunaga's direction gives the retro-futurist production design a lived-in strangeness that never tips into empty style. Beneath the formal fireworks it's a sincere, melancholy study of grief, dependency and the appeal of a manufactured cure.
