In April 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear plant explodes, and the Soviet state's first instinct is not to contain the disaster but to deny it. A dogged scientist, a party apparatchik and a composite physicist race to grasp the scale of the catastrophe while a machinery of lies threatens to doom millions. Meticulous and quietly furious, the miniseries reconstructs the human cost of the meltdown, from doomed firefighters to the coal miners and soldiers sent to clean up the unthinkable. It stands as a chilling study of what happens when a system fears the truth more than death itself.
