Atlanta follows cousins Earnest 'Earn' Marks and Alfred Miles, an aspiring rapper who performs as Paper Boi, as they try to break into the city's cutthroat hip-hop scene while barely keeping their own lives afloat. Donald Glover, who also created the show, plays Earn with a weary, watchful stillness, while Brian Tyree Henry's Paper Boi and LaKeith Stanfield's spaced-out philosopher Darius anchor a world where surrealism creeps into everyday errands and cookouts. Zazie Beetz's Van gives the show its emotional gravity as Earn's on-and-off partner and co-parent. Funny, melancholic, and formally daring, it treats Atlanta itself as a character worth studying as closely as its people.
