Samira Makhmalbaf

Samira Makhmalbaf is an Iranian director born in Tehran, daughter of director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who became one of the youngest filmmakers ever selected for competition at Cannes. The Apple, made when she was just seventeen and based on a real case of twin girls kept locked away by their parents, established her observational, documentary-influenced style working with non-professional actors. Blackboards, following itinerant teachers carrying blackboards across the war-torn Iran-Iraq border region in search of students, extended her fascination with education and survival amid conflict, winning the Jury Prize at Cannes. At Five in the Afternoon, shot in Afghanistan shortly after the fall of the Taliban, examined a young woman's aspiration to become the country's president. Samira Makhmalbaf's precocious international recognition and continued focus on marginalized lives amid regional conflict made her one of the most significant young voices of the Iranian New Wave's second generation.
