Rentaro Mikuni

Rentaro Mikuni, born in Ota in 1923, was one of postwar Japanese cinema's towering character leads, known for a fierce intelligence and unnerving stillness. He drew international attention as the moral center of Kon Ichikawa's The Burmese Harp (1956) and delivered a chilling performance as the killer's father in Shohei Imamura's Vengeance Is Mine (1979). He then reinvented himself as a beloved everyman in the long-running Free and Easy (Tsuribaka Nisshi) comedy series from the late 1980s onward. His career spanned six decades until his death in 2013.
