Trained in avant-garde theatre with the Kokushoku Tent, he became a regular presence in Takashi Miike’s cinema, notably in Audition (1999) and Ichi the Killer (2001), where his ability to unsettle from stillness set the tone of entire scenes. He is equally at home in mainstream television dramas, in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s thrillers and in yakuza films. A prolific supporting actor with a distinctive baritone voice, he has anchored Japanese screen character work for nearly six decades.
