Já velho e internado num asilo, o medíocre compositor da corte Antonio Salieri confessa o veneno de uma obsessão de toda a vida: seu encontro com Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, um jovem prodígio vulgar e risonho cujo talento sem esforço zomba da devoção pia de Salieri. Consumido pela inveja, o compositor mais velho decide destruir justamente o talento que só ele é capaz de realmente reconhecer. Milos Forman conduz esse suntuoso drama de época com espírito e grandeza, deixando a música de Mozart inundar uma história sobre o tormento da mediocridade diante da grandeza, uma meditação luxuosa e profundamente humana sobre inveja, fé e a crueldade dos dons divinos.
