Payman Maadi is an Iranian-American actor and screenwriter, born in New York and raised in Tehran, who came to acting late after years writing screenplays. Asghar Farhadi made him a star: after 'About Elly' (2009), his stubborn, wounded husband Nader in 'A Separation' (2011) shared the Berlinale's Silver Bear as the film won the foreign-language Oscar. He crossed into American work with 'Camp X-Ray' (2014) opposite Kristen Stewart and the acclaimed HBO series 'The Night Of' (2016), while anchoring Iranian hits like the narcotics epic 'Law of Tehran' (2019). His forte is ordinary men ground down by impossible systems.
