Paul Kelly

Paul Kelly, born in Brooklyn in 1899, was an American stage and film actor whose career survived one of Hollywood's most notorious scandals. A child performer on the New York stage, he moved into silent film in the 1910s and returned to Broadway after a widely publicised imprisonment for the fatal 1927 beating of a rival, winning a Tony Award in 1948 for Command Decision. On screen he specialised in decent, no-nonsense authority figures, appearing in wartime dramas and westerns such as Crossfire (1947), The High and the Mighty (1954) and Ziegfeld Girl (1941). He worked steadily until his sudden death in 1956.
