Noah Baumbach

Noah Baumbach is an American director born in Brooklyn, New York, celebrated for sharply written, emotionally acute films examining divorce, artistic ambition, and family dysfunction among literary and creative New Yorkers. The Squid and the Whale, drawn from his own parents' divorce, established his gift for painfully funny, autobiographically inflected family drama. Frances Ha, shot in black and white and co-written with star Greta Gerwig, showed a warmer, more buoyant register examining post-college aimlessness, while Marriage Story, an unflinching account of a couple's disintegrating relationship and custody battle, became one of his most widely seen and acclaimed films, earning multiple Academy Award nominations. The Meyerowitz Stories and White Noise extended his focus on family dysfunction and, in the latter case, absurdist consumerist anxiety. Baumbach's precise, dialogue-driven examination of family and creative failure has made him one of the defining chroniclers of contemporary American literary neurosis.
