Max Joseph's drama follows Cole Carter (Zac Efron), an aspiring EDM DJ in the San Fernando Valley chasing his breakthrough single while working odd jobs and partying with his tight-knit crew of friends. His fortunes shift when he's taken under the wing of James Reed (Wes Bentley), a burned-out star DJ whose girlfriend Cole begins falling for, complicating both his mentorship and his loyalty to his oldest friends. The film attempts to capture the mid-2010s EDM festival scene's visual and sonic excess while grounding it in a fairly conventional coming-of-age arc about ambition and friendship. Despite a starring vehicle built around Efron's post-Disney reinvention, it underperformed at the box office and was largely overlooked on release.
