DirectorOrson Welles
ScreenplayWhit Masterson, Orson Welles
Orson Welles's baroque film noir masterpiece opens with one of cinema's most celebrated tracking shots and only deepens from there. Welles directs and stars as Hank Quinlan, a corrupt, bloated border-town cop clashing with an idealistic Mexican official (Charlton Heston) after a car bombing. Shadow-drenched and morally rotten, with Marlene Dietrich in an unforgettable turn, it was recut by the studio but later restored to Welles's vision. A landmark that many consider the last classic-era noir.
