When the baby vanishes inexplicably before the eyes of the eldest daughter, Thomasin, fear, guilt and suspicion begin to corrode everyone, and the word witchcraft creeps in among them. With the crops failing and their faith wavering, each member turns against the others. Robert Eggers makes his debut with a meticulous, oppressive tale of historical horror, spoken in period English, that exudes an unbearable atmosphere of religious paranoia.
