Writer-director Bryan Bertino strips the home-invasion genre down to its rawest, most unsettling essentials, drawing dread from silence, patience and the horrifying banality of the killers' motive: 'because you were home.' Its minimalist, almost documentary-flat approach to violence made it one of the more effective and imitated horror films of the late 2000s.
