The Coen brothers' 'The Ladykillers' transplants the classic Ealing comedy to the American South, with Tom Hanks as a florid, self-satisfied professor who assembles a bumbling crew to tunnel into a casino vault from the cellar of a pious old widow's house. Their scheme keeps unraveling in her presence. Broader and more cartoonish than the Coens' best, it's an uneven, minor entry in their filmography. Hanks clearly enjoys the flamboyance, but critics and audiences found it a lesser, forgettable outing.
