Andrei Tarkovsky's philosophical science-fiction masterpiece follows a psychologist sent to a space station orbiting the enigmatic planet Solaris, whose sentient ocean begins manifesting physical embodiments of the crew's deepest memories and guilt. Adapted from Stanisław Lem's novel, Tarkovsky uses the sci-fi premise as a vehicle for meditations on love, grief, and the limits of human understanding, favoring long contemplative takes over spectacle. Often called the 'Soviet 2001: A Space Odyssey', it stands as one of the most profound and influential works in the genre's history.
