A domestic thriller directed by Joseph Ruben, in which a battered wife fakes her own drowning to escape a controlling, abusive husband and start a new life under a false identity. Julia Roberts, at the height of her early stardom, plays the terrified woman, with Patrick Bergin as the obsessive spouse who will not let go. Slick and suspenseful if formulaic, it was a big commercial hit despite critics finding it a glossy, predictable potboiler.
