Chris Taylor is a privileged young college student who drops out and volunteers to fight in Vietnam, convinced he is doing his duty, until the brutality of the jungle shatters his idealism. In his platoon he finds two opposing figures who embody the two souls of man: the compassionate Sergeant Elias and the merciless, hardened Sergeant Barnes, between whom erupts a moral conflict that splits the troop. Witness to atrocities and to the dehumanization of war, Chris fights the battle outside as well as the one within his own conscience.
