Robin Williams plays the real-life Dr. Hunter 'Patch' Adams, a medical student who defies the rigid conventions of 1970s healthcare by treating humor and human connection as essential medicine, clashing repeatedly with an administration more concerned with clinical detachment than patient joy. Director Tom Shadyac leans into Williams's manic, big-hearted comic persona to sell the character's unconventional bedside manner, including his trademark red clown nose. The film's blend of slapstick and heartfelt tragedy proved divisive with critics, who found its sentimentality heavy-handed. Despite the mixed reviews, it became a substantial box-office hit and remains one of Williams's most widely recognized dramatic-comedy roles.
