Kevin Costner directs and stars alongside Robert Duvall in this elegiac Western about free-range cattlemen who are forced to confront a corrupt rancher and his hired guns terrorizing a small frontier town. The film takes its time establishing the quiet rhythms of life on the open trail before erupting in one of the most viscerally realistic gunfights ever staged in the genre. Costner and Duvall bring weathered authenticity to their roles as men who have left violence behind but won't back down when innocents are threatened. A throwback to classical Westerns that earns its climactic showdown through patience and character.
