A gentle, sunny comedy directed by, co-written by and starring Tom Hanks. After being laid off from a big-box store, a middle-aged everyman reinvents himself at community college, buys a scooter, and slowly warms the heart of his disillusioned public-speaking teacher (Julia Roberts). Pleasant and good-natured to a fault, it is the definition of low-stakes charm. Critics found it slight, and it made only a modest impression despite its megawatt leads.
