Horror author Clive Barker makes his directorial debut adapting his own novella 'The Hellbound Heart', about a mysterious puzzle box that summons the Cenobites, sadomasochistic extradimensional beings who blur the line between exquisite pleasure and unbearable pain. The plot follows a resurrected man's hunger for human sacrifice to rebuild his flesh, aided by his lover and stalked by her stepdaughter. Grim, philosophically twisted and utterly original next to the era's slasher glut, it launched a long-running franchise and introduced horror icon Pinhead to the genre.
